Before you rush out and purchase any type of alarm system for your home you should consider the variety that is available and what your needs may be. There are a large number of home security systems that are sufficient but you really should know what you are looking for and the cost of maintaining them. Some can be rather expensive to purchase as well as keeping up with the maintenance of the system.

Some companies install and maintain these for customers. They hire reliable installers and train them in installation so the systems are ensured of working properly. Monitoring centers are staffed by trained people who knows what to do in the event that an alarm sounds. They first contact the resident and after ensuring the alarm is valid, they send out the appropriate emergency people.

Other versions are individually purchased, installed and maintained. These come in a variety of types such as electric or battery powered, video surveillance, door or window alarms. All of these are available for at reasonable prices and are easy to install for the average homeowner. Each of them has their own benefits.

Indoor systems are usually attached to the doors and windows of your home. They are great for those with children who want to be alerted to a door or window opening. They can be instrumental to letting you know that your child has opened the door. Some include motion sensors that also detect the movement within a room.

If you are looking for outdoor security, then a surveillance system may be what you need. These operate on sensors that detect movement of a wider area such as your entire lawn. Many of the new models have programming to differentiate between wildlife and a person. They do this by detecting the size and weight of whatever is moving. These are instrumental in reducing the number of false alarms from small animals.

You will find that the biggest part of systems operate on electricity. In case of a power outage, they have a built-in battery that takes over when the electricity goes out. They are usually only good for a few hours before the system ceases to operate. Battery power is more reliable in terms of working all the time than the electric versions so long as the battery is properly maintained.

Video surveillance is a more sophisticated version of alarm. It allows you to monitor an area via closed circuit television. Some are wireless but these are more apt to be interfered with by weather than electric power. The combined components, transmitters and receiver, connect to a television or video recorder so it can be monitored.

Although this is a dependable way to protect your home, you should not completely rely on home security systems. It is recommended that you include reliable locks and lighting for added security. Outdoor furnishings can be secured in an enclosed area or include motion lights that come on if motion is detected.

Making sure you home is safe should be a top priority. You can provide protection for your home with some basic house improvements. Here are just a few ideas.

Install new locks on your windows and doors. Many older locks are not very strong and should be replaced. If your windows, especially second story windows, do not have locks on them make certain to add some. Make certain all doors to the outside have dead bolts.

Trim all hedges that may get in the way of you seeing the area around your home properly. None of your windows or doors should have anything in front of them to block your line of sight. Make certain that all entrances and exits can be seen clearly.

Install motion or heat sensing flood lights around your home, in both the front and back yards. If any of your outside lights have timers, set them to go off at regular intervals during the night. This will help keep your home well lit and keep dark shadows away where prowlers may want to lurk.

If you are away from home for a while remember to have your home look as if its still being occupied. Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to collect your mail and newspapers while you are gone. Park your car in the driveway to give your place a lived in appearance, or ask your neighbor to park their car there while you are away.

For home safety install a self-charging smoke detector. You don’t want to worry about a smoke detector that might get a dead battery. It’s also a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher in an easy to reach place, and let everyone in the home know how to use it.

Join your neighborhood watch, or start one yourself. It is 100% free. Sometimes a neighborhood watch sign can be enough to convince a prowler to find another area.

There are a lot of other precautions you can do to protect your home. Some other good ideas include installing a professional security system in your home and replacing flimsy outside doors with more sturdy ones. And don’t forget to update your homeowners insurance, just in case something unexpected happens.
