The latest trend today in home renovation involves the rapid influx of “going GREEN.” Nope, it’s not about changing your wallpaper to green! It’s about going full force on indoor environmental quality, energy and water efficiency, and design innovation. It is by acting on your home to be environment friendly as well as a family friendly abode. Major companies have started to shift to an energy-saving corporation. It started with appliances and gradually branched out to a certified advancement on man and his environment through home renovation.


LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), a third party green building certification system, has now been having great feedback on international broadcasts. It was established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This may have started on the growth of efficient business establishments and office buildings but the USGBC has issued a green certification on private residences as well. Although, the private residence issuance on the green certification needs a registration fee and has to abide by the USGBC guidelines.


The project is to be verified and seen by the LEED for Home Provider, making sure that all the guidelines are met. Thus, home renovations, new/multi-family homes and even those that need demolitions are under its supervision. In home renovation, everything should be planned out so that the provisions that will be given and supplied by the LEED will be implemented for a greener way of living. Materials, site selection and development will be verified and constantly be monitored for appropriate instrumentation to aid in energy saving and conservation.


Although, LEED will not work for small-scale home renovations as per extensive planning and implementation requires the totality of the structure. If your not aware of the term “Going Green” yet you may want to take your head out of the sand and open your eyes and ears. Everything from appliances to paint are going green now and for a good reason. Going green refers to the amount of impact the machine or supply has on the environment. The “Greener” something is the better it is for the environment and the carbon foot print you leave on this earth. This has nothing to do with being little green space people either.


Bidformaterials.com has joined the club and excepted that sooner or later everything will have to be green. Once a contractor post a job and a supply list that they need there is a “GREEN” button with the symbol of a leaf. Clever? I know. Once they add what they need to the list and press the button an email will go out to all of the suppliers letting them know the contractor is interested in a green alternative. Now instead of getting regular paint they will receive an option to take the “green” paint, and no they don’t have to take that color it’s just a term people.

There are more than a few diverse types of wind power. At its most fundamental wind is in fact a form of sun power since wind is created from the heating of the terrain. The earth receives more energy from the sun in one hour than the power requirement of the world for the whole year. Solar energy is free, renewable, clean and sustainable. We know how to harness it and we know where to use it best. Below are the different uses of solar energy.


Grid-Tied Residential Homes


Solar energy can be used hand in hand with your current electricity provider. This is ideal to those who live in places where sunlight does not shine year round, to those who live in areas where electricity is cheap and to those who just want to use solar energy as a backup to their existing source of power. The idea is that if you have 2 sources of power, you can get uninterrupted power supply all the time.


One of the benefits of having a grid-tied solar energy system at home is that you can turn your electric meter backwards. This happens when you produce more energy than you use. The excess power that your system generates is sent out to the grid, which will be used by other households. As a result, your electric meter turns backwards and your electric provider will pay you for the amount of energy your system has produced.

With our energy and water sources depleting, people have begun to sit up and take notice. There are things that we can do to preserve our environment, and where we live. I am going to show you how to turn your properties into eco friendly homes. These will be simple fixes to make, some which can be more expensive than others, but all designed to save water and electricity.


If you have older windows in your home, they can be leaking out all the heat and the air conditioned air in your home. To prevent that, a good idea is the purchase double glazed windows for your entire home. These windows are made to keep the energy inside the home and keep the heat and cold outside. Although the windows can be rather expensive, it will be worth the energy that you are conserving and will also increase the value of your property.


Anytime you go into a room and it is either too cold or too hot, odds are there is not enough insulation in the walls and attic. That would be the time to consider replacing the insulation. Once this is done you will notice a difference almost immediately. The heat or cold stays in the room instead of going up and out the roof.


Everything you have done up to this point has been done to save on electricity. Now let us talk about solar panels. Solar panels are installed on top of your roof where they collect the suns rays. The rays are then changed into electricity to use in your home. It is a wonderful invention. Some research needs to be done and you will need a contractor to place them on the roof and explain how much electricity you can expect to save.


When you finally decide that you need new appliances, before purchasing go look at them and make sure they are energy efficient. Most appliances these days are, so finding them would be no trouble at all. A must to replace is the refrigerator, washer, dryer, and dishwasher. All of these new purchases will save up to 40 percent of the electricity that your old machines normally consume.


One very small change would be to purchase and place in new energy efficient light bulbs. Place these in every lamp and socket in your home. They come in the same watts and sizes as regular light bulbs. They also have the tube lights that are used in some kitchens and in the garage or workshop. It is said that these kind of bulbs consume about five times less energy than a regular bulb. Think about how much savings that would be over the next five years.


To save even more in your every day life turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth, turn off lights as you exit a room, and install low water toilets in all the bathrooms. Using the toaster oven as opposed to the large oven is also a great idea because it only consumes about a third of the electricity. Also, don’t forget to unplug small unused appliances, as they still use electricity when plugged in.


To sum it up, you now have a few ideas of getting your homes partially eco friendly. Do what you can now to upgrade your space, and add to it. For example you could add energy saving appliances one at a time. All of the eco upgrades that you add now will pay off in the future when and if you ever decide to sell your homes. You will also appreciate the savings when you start receiving the light bills.
