Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is an award-winning reality television series that changes the lives of deserving families in need. The Lutz family was surprised at the Yankees versus Mets game on June 20th where it was announced that they would be featured on Extreme Makeover Home Edition. During this first build of the upcoming season, which took place in East Setauket, New York, we saw an unbelievable amount of altruism from construction companies across Long Island that led to a successful completion of a new home.

Alure Home Improvements was selected an 8th time as the contractor in charge of the build. Prior to the build, BidForMaterials.com received a material list from
Alure with materials that were in need through donation. The registered suppliers in the BidForMaterials.com network were notified of the opportunity to help a
family in need. As a registered supplier you have access to the material lists, which included everything from HVAC supplies to roof supplies.

The amount of companies that volunteered was truly inspiring. As a result, BidForMaterials.com acquired donations in the areas of sanitary systems,
aggregates, plumbing, granite slabs, porcelain tiles, electric, lumber and landscape lighting for the Lutz family’s new home.

With the building of the house finished and the Lutz family moved in, Extreme Makeover moved on to Baltimore, Maryland, with construction of the local Boys
Hope Girls Hope Chapter. BidForMaterials.com continued with its work in Baltimore, seeking volunteers and materials, and has moved onto the next location

If your not aware of the term “Going Green” yet you may want to take your head out of the sand and open your eyes and ears. Everything from appliances to paint are going green now and for a good reason. Going green refers to the amount of impact the machine or supply has on the environment. The “Greener” something is the better it is for the environment and the carbon foot print you leave on this earth. This has nothing to do with being little green space people either.

Bidformaterials.com has joined the club and excepted that sooner or later everything will have to be green. Once a contractor post a job and a supply list that they need there is a “GREEN” button with the symbol of a leaf. Clever? I know. Once they add what they need to the list and press the button an email will go out to all of the suppliers letting them know the contractor is interested in a green alternative. Now instead of getting regular paint they will receive an option to take the “green” paint, and no they don’t have to take that color it’s just a term people.

With this addition to BidForMaterials.com available now, we are already two steps ahead of the game. Hopefully soon everyone will have an available option like this and everyone can be a little better off. What buttons will we think of next?

Walking the show, learning about new and exciting building products the two partners
researched and created a target list for select suppliers to become members of their website.
Construction material suppliers complete a simple registration form on the website and
suppliers who qualify are placed on the preferred list of suppliers who can bid on quality
contractor’s material lists nationwide. This service is free to suppliers.

After the show on Friday, JLC Live sponsored a welcome party for all who attended and
exhibited at the show. BidForMaterials.com values the direct contact that is available at
networking events. Cann stated, “We do not come and walk a trade show to take contractors
away from exhibitors.” However BidForMaterials.com received feedback from various size
contracting companies who approached them. Most of the contractors had the same things to
say about the website and its functions, “Is it available nationwide?” and “Are my local
suppliers registered?”

Bidformaterials.com does not limit the categories in which it connects suppliers to contractors
for quotes on building material lists. The categories range from roof supplies, drywall supplies,
HVAC suppliers, and plumbing supplies to moulding and millwork, to material handling and
simple fasteners. There are over 50 categories on the site currently and more and more are
being added as needed. The website’s goal is to give every supplier the opportunity to get
Free leads through its service. If suppliers can move products then manufacturers can
continue to produce, and that creates jobs. “The construction industry needs jobs,” said Cann.
The service is not limited to any specific demographic and does not discriminate against any
supplier from drop shipment companies to mom and pop shops.

This B-to-B network has over 3,000 suppliers registered nationwide and has just opened the
doors for contractors to start enrolling. They project over 10,000 suppliers and over 1,000
contractors to join by year end. Cann said, “This projection will give approximately 10 quotes
to every single building material list posted by a contractor.” “This will definitely give
contractors the most powerful tool in their tool box, more JOBS!”

Recessions may mean hard times for businesses, but they also are mothers of invention. Entrepreneurs head for their garages and workshops, and business types get busy thinking up new ways to compete. Frederick Cann, a residential and light-commercial contractor based in Medford, N.Y., has done that, and came up with www.BidForMaterials.com, a kind of dating service for contractors and suppliers.

“During this recession, all us contractors have done nothing but scramble for work, and the way to get more work is to be more competitive and manage money better,” says Cann, now president of the enterprise he and two partners quietly launched in October. “I started thinking about construction materials and pricing, and I reached out to the Internet to see if there was a buying program. I found buying programs for cars and appliances, but I found nothing for the general construction industry, so I developed the website. All it does is connect suppliers and contractors.”

It is a simple concept and the business model seems to be simple, too. Contractors pay $50 a month for an annual subscription to join the system. Suppliers use it for free. Contractors post their bill of materials and invite suppliers to bid. Suppliers and contractors can open a dialogue through the site to exchange additional information. When they have a deal, the contractor clicks a button to “accept bid” and then conduct the rest of the transaction as usual.

But the business plan behind Cann’s project is a good bit more elaborate. The goal is to line up a sales agent for each state and divide each state into regions, with a subagent for each region. The plan is to sign up at least three suppliers for every major building product category in each region to ensure competitive bids. “We have 37 states covered,” Cann says. “But we are still looking for salespeople, and we are open to subagents in any region. The more the merrier.”

Cann now has four partners: a developer, a real estate agent, a commercial contractor and a plumbing contractor.

In the first three months 728 suppliers have signed up, Cann says. The company plans to launch its marketing program to contractors at the International Builders Show, in Las Vegas, on Jan. 19. But even without marketing, 42 contractors who happened upon the site have signed up for the service, says Cann.
